The Fountain District: A Growing Urban Village
One of the attributes of the Heliotrope Hotel is its location at the crossroads of three Bellingham neighborhoods, offering proximity to the amenities of shopping districts and the relaxed vibe of local living. Whether you’re feeling like a quiet stroll to nearby tree-filled Elizabeth Park in the Columbia neighborhood, or a lively evening out in the Fountain District, there is so much within walking and biking distance of our boutique hotel.
Relaxation, Rejuvenation, Retail
The Fountain District is one of Bellingham’s growing urban villages, where new businesses are finding their homes alongside old favorites. Pretty Penny Clothing - which has been in business elsewhere for 13 years - reopened its doors in April across the street from the Heliotrope’s Yard. Shoppers can engage in a treasure hunt, finding wearable fun fashions from the 1920s-1970s. A neighborhood cornerstone since 1993, The Re-Store also offers recycled goods, in the form of vintage home decor and building supplies. Yoga practitioners will find a new space to move at nearby Intent Hot Yoga, a great way to start or end any day. For deep relaxation, take advantage of our 10% discount for a massage and float and bike or walk a mile to our friends at Still Life Massage and Float. Invite friends and family to join you down the street for one of Elizabeth Park’s weekly summertime outdoor concerts.
Grab a Beer Nearby
One of the many Bellingham businesses that celebrate locally grown food is Goods Produce. Walk just a few blocks from the Heliotrope to pick up fresh, seasonal produce, and linger over a local beer or food from the taco truck at one of the outside picnic tables. Like Goods, Elizabeth Station is a well-loved community gathering place for connection and camaraderie, just a short stroll from the Heliotrope. Offering hundreds of varieties of beer and cider, accompanied by a delicious bar food menu and a relaxed atmosphere, this watering hole is pure Bellingham. Other nearby breweries include Menace and Melvin, both within blocks of the hotel.
Coffee is Just a Walk Away
For liquid of a different sort, pop into Primer. Located directly next door to Elizabeth Station, they roast, make and serve coffee with integrity, in a modern, bright atmosphere. The Lettered Streets Coffeehouse offers a relaxed neighborhood vibe to linger over unique concoctions like lavender lattes. And for filling food to go with that cup of coffee, Diamond Jim’s serves up breakfast and lunch all day, every day. Check out more nearby dining favorites on our Food & Beverage page.
While Whatcom county offers a bounty of recreation and urban adventures that require a vehicle to access, there is something really settling about walking or biking to one’s destination. We support multi modes of transport with a bike washing station and secure bike storage, and relaxing common spaces to unwind on sofas in our Hub or around the firepit in The Yard. If your dog joins you at one of the many pet friendly establishments in the area, book one of our pet friendly rooms. We’re pleased as punch to see a thriving district growing around The Heliotrope Hotel!
