Welcoming Guests from Bellingham and Beyond for Ski to Sea 2019
If you live in Bellingham - and even if you don’t - there’s a good chance you’ve been connected to Ski to Sea in some way, Whatcom County’s annual mountain to sea relay over Memorial Day weekend. Perhaps you’ve only heard about it, or have participated as racer, planner, team supporter, cheering section, or post-race reveler.
Whatcom County’s premier multi-sport event extends far beyond our PNW corner: friends, family, and athletes arrive from all over the world to participate in an original race that celebrates camaraderie more than competition. A spirit of enthusiasm, inclusion, celebration, and innovation among and between teams permeates Ski to Ski, before, during and after race day. While this homegrown event has global connections, it is a uniquely Whatcom County experience, celebrating physical activity, ecosystems from mountain to sea, and joyful community collaboration.
The Heliotrope Hotel feels a kinship to Ski to Sea, as our homegrown hotel aims to embody many of the values and vibe of the race. The Heliotrope offers a relaxed and friendly atmosphere and welcoming spirit that engages everyone who arrives. Our Pacific Northwest sense of place is reflected in offerings like pet friendly rooms, coat racks made from trees, and comfortable gathering spaces in The Hub - a living room-like lounge - and The Yard, our outdoor space with a firepit, lawn games, and casual seating spaces.
Begun in 1973, the Ski to Ski race takes participants from the Mt. Baker Ski Area to the Salish Sea, via seven different sports: cross country ski, downhill ski/snowboard, running, road bike, canoe, cyclocross bike, and sea kayak. This unique race spans much of Whatcom County, passing through the towns of Glacier, Maple Falls, Kendall, Everson, Lynden, and Ferndale, finishing at Marine Park in Bellingham’s historic Fairhaven district. Ski to Sea race and post-race festivals comprise the largest one-day event in Whatcom County and Bellingham, bringing racers, spectators, and tourists from around the Pacific Northwest and beyond.
For participants or onlookers, The Heliotrope offers an ideal space to return to: room for gear, including boot dryers and a bike storage room and washing station; community connection in common spaces and restful privacy in thoughtfully designed rooms; same floor entry for all guests; and proximity to both Ski to Sea action and the best Bellingham has to offer.
We’re happy to carry the spirit of Ski to Sea from the slopes, sea and streets into and around the hotel during Ski to Sea week. Book your room now and join the fun!
