The Furniture – Smith & Vallee cabinetry

Smith & Vallee Woodworks located in Bow, Washington.

In our formative stages, Heliotrope Hotel knew that we wanted to utilize local craftsman and artisans in the major renovation that has transformed our hotel to a modern space, celebrating the  natural beauty that surrounds us. While designing the interior we sought out a local company capable of designing and building furniture and cabinetry customized for our needs. This vision lead us to local company Smith & Vallee Woodworks.

Smith & Vallee was established in 1997 here in Whatcom county, and now operates out of our neighboring community of Edison, WA. Since their beginning, Smith & Vallee has adhered to a strong environmental ethic, including working with FSC certified and responsible wood products and transitioning to solar power for their manufacturing process. Smith & Vallee makes cabinets and furniture that are healthy for our guests and for the environment.

In addition to building cabinetry and furniture, Smith & Vallee is known locally for The Tree Project. In 2002, Andrew Vallee and Wesley Smith presented The Tree Project at the Whatcom Museum here in Bellingham, WA. The exhibition focused on the transformation of a single big leaf maple that was taken from a sustainably managed forest. For three years Smith & Vallee studied, documented, and crafted this tree into 55 pieces of furniture, including a 65 foot long sculpture that replicates the original shape of the tree.

Heliotrope Hotel is proud to have partnered with this local company for the interior design phase of our project. The platform beds, live edge bar, and cabinetry throughout our hotel reflect our nod towards mid-century-modern design. Simple, modern, local and sustainable.

Smith & Vallee also has a fine art gallery in the village of Edison, just around a bend and off of the scenic byway of Chuckanut Drive.  Get a tour of Smith & Vallee’s woodshop and visit their gallery that features monthly shows of artwork from some of the best artists the Northwest has to offer. Shopping, dining, birding, biking and enjoying the slow pace and scenery make for a great day trip, just a 30 minute drive south from our hotel.
